Barbie has long been acknowledged as a ill-served image for young girls and concepts of body image, but the doll came to life from humble beginnings, when Carol Spencer began making paper dolls of normal proportions during the WWII era from newspapers and comics. The doll became an outlet for her acute fashion sense. Each outfit she designed had a theme, like Ski Party Pink, and when Spencer designed for fashion shows, her team or acquaintances were often inspired by her work – they sent their models down the runway with pink suit skits and the classic Barbie blond pouf.
