The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts here in Philadelphia recently received 78 works by primarily African American artists. They were donated by Constance E. Clayton, arts advocate and former superintendent of the Philadelphia School District. Clayton’s donation consists mostly of drawings and paintings from the late 19th and 20th centuries. Some of the artists include Samuel Joseph Brown Jr. (attended the University of Pennsylvania), Laura Wheeler Waring (see featured image), Beauford Delaney, and Barkley L. Hendricks.
