Today (March 8th) is International Women’s Day. This global day celebrates the “social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women” (internationalwomensday.com). The campaign theme for 2019 is #BalanceForBetter, which focuses on achieving a more gender-balanced world. The symbol is the female sign within a circular arrow. There is a notable break between the start and the end of the arrow as well as a break in the middle that can also be interpreted as a negative (-) sign. The outer arrow could be interpreted as the male sign to signal that the movement is about equality not superiority. This movement makes me feel hopeful, yet I also noted that my only friends who recognized it publicly were women. I appreciate that the organization states, “IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere,” because it creates a sense of unity.
