This week in class we discussed how signs, icons, indices, and symbols are used to convey different messages to viewers. I’ve recently be rewatching the Netflix series Mad Men, which tells the stories of fictional ad men in the 1950s-60s. The opening credits of the show features various examples of icons, from the lone man to his office to the buildings he travels past. These are icons because they are straight representations between their signal and meaning. This picture shows four snippets from the opening credits with the man icon seen from different perspectives. The ads that the fictional characters create for their clients feature creative usages of icons as well (example below: Kodak).
