Kenny Sing has found a way to beautifully synthesize two art media that would (seemingly) never intersect in his project, Trepo. By using the already cyclical nature of the pottery wheel, Sing has found a way to transform still images into captivating, dynamic moving animations. Not only are his animations incredible satisfying, but they also represent a very meaningful simplicity, much like our process in class today where we created a map only using basic shapes and lines. Trepo extended my conception of what a zoetrope could be and shocked me with its “optical illusion of animation”, despite being created entirely with carvings and glaze on his ceramic pieces.
